Veraison

Veraison, in viticulture, is the change from berry growth to berry ripening. We can see this in the grapes because the colors begin to change (green to red), acidity decreases, sugar increases, and ripe flavors begin to develop. Veraison has officially begun here at the Stowe Vineyard at Indian Creek Winery and this means that harvest is just around the corner. We typically see veraison sometime during the first two weeks in August but this year we are just starting to see some color change in the Pinot Noir. This means that we are nearly 2 weeks later than we have been in the past few years. This is not a bad thing though, a later harvest means cooler temperatures and cooler harvest temperatures mean better acidity and riper flavors in the grapes.
